Ex-NFL player beaten at Houston hotel had his photo taken with the supposed bodyguard hours before

The police have identified an individual sought in connection with a violent assault at a hotel in Houston, Texas last week. According to NBC News, the victim, former NFL player Zac Stacy, was left hospitalized and with a fractured orbital bone after being beaten by an individual hired to be his “personal bodyguard” — later identified as James Matthews. Matthews is reportedly being sought on aggravated assault charges. Stacy had just had his picture taken with Matthews. The alleged assault happened the next day. The interview was conducted by Stacy’s ex-girlfriend, who says she fears for her safety as well.

Shortly after the interview was done, the Houston police announced that they were “actively investigating a possible witness, a hotel employee, in this case.” In an interview with BuzzFeed, Stacy’s ex-girlfriend was asked about the incident, including the alleged assault — and the person she said she had feared most. She responded, “I don’t want to say what I wanted to say, but I did.”

Stacy’s former girlfriend also had previously written about her feelings toward Matthews — on Facebook, and at a rally in relation to a previous assault. Stacy and the unidentified individual have not commented publicly.
